Summer Photography Exhibition 2020

Alon Zakaim Fine Art is proud to present an exhibition of mixed photography, including classic images from Terry O'Neill and Chris Smith, as well as an extensive collection of powerful photographs by wildlife photographer Michel Ghatan. Broadly focusing on portraiture, the photographs fill the walls of the downstairs gallery with dynamic compositions where striking figures are cast in a dramatic and contrasted black and white.
With over a decade of experience as a wildlife photographer in East Africa, Michel Ghatan brings a revived sense of intimacy and passion to his images, focusing on a personal and decidedly up-close relationship with his subjects in order to produce images in which the animals are nuanced individuals rather than far away figures in a telephoto lens. Michel connects with local tribesmen who act as his guide during walking safaris, opting to approach his subjects on foot rather than from the comfort of the Jeep. The resultant images are a powerful testament to Michel's passion for the East African wildlife.
Alongside these works are a collection of iconic images of Muhammad Ali taken in the '60s and '70s by Chris Smith - a photographer at the forefront of British sports photography for more than thirty years. The work on display includes the famous Ali vs The Beatles, taken when the group met Ali in 1964 at the 5th Street Gym, Miami during their first US tour, as well as the arresting image Float Like A Butterfly. Having won The Sports Photographer of the Year on four occasions, and Individual Sports Picture of the Year twice, Smith's images are timelessly unique and propagate the legacy of one of the most famous sportsmen of all time.
Working at a similar time to Chris Smith but in the field of celebrity portraiture was Terry O'Neill, whose subjects ranged from The Rolling Stones to the Royal Family. On display is a portrait of David Bowie taken as part of the photoshoot for his 1974 album Diamond Dogs, as well as a bold portrait of Dean Martin in 1971.
The exhibition will run at 5-7 Dover St, London, W1S 4LD. Entry is free, and gallery opening hours are 9am - 6pm, Monday - Friday, or by appointment.
