Eric Tucker: The Secret Painter

Please note that all the paintings in the exhibition have now sold, but please contact the gallery to be added to our Eric Tucker mailing list.

Less than three years after his death, northern painter Eric Tucker's posthumously uncovered artwork is to be exhibited publicly and sold for the first time at two of London's leading galleries.

Alon Zakaim Fine Art and Connaught Brown have teamed up to present 40 of the late artist's evocative scenes of working-class life in the industrial North in their collaborative exhibition, Eric Tucker: The Secret Painter.

Largely unknown as an artist during his lifetime, Tucker left school at 14 and worked as a manual labourer, painting in between shifts and after hours, often late into the night. Self-educated in art, he was a regular visitor to the galleries of nearby Manchester. However, highly unforthcoming about his talent, it was only following his death in 2018 that he came to public attention when his family discovered over 400 pieces of artwork stored in his small, terraced house in Warrington.

Following this discovery, his family opened his terraced house as a gallery and thousands flocked to see Tucker's work and a retrospective at Warrington Museum & Art Gallery followed. Critics praised Tucker as 'a real discovery' and the 'a remarkable, important find', drawing comparisons with, amongst others, L.S. Lowry and Edward Burra.

Anthony Brown and Alon Zakaim, Directors at the two host galleries said: "We are delighted to be showing the work of Eric Tucker who holds an interesting place in modern British art. Although described as the 'secret Lowry', his work is far more complex than that. While Lowry paints from afar, surveying the area, Tucker throws the viewer into the midst of a scene. He painted his community in Warrington without judgement, but instead with humour and witty observation. Although largely hidden during his lifetime, we are looking forward to giving Tucker's work the recognition it deserves."

Works from Eric Tucker: The Secret Painter will be available to view and for general sale from the Preview Weekend onwards. The exhibition will be held at Alon Zakaim Fine Art (27 Cork St. London W1S 3NG) and Connaught Brown (2 Albemarle St. London W1S 4HD), 5 July - 6 August 2021.
