Yakov Chernikhov

(Ukrainian/Russian, 1889-1951)

Yakov Chernikhov was a Russian architect and graphic designer, born in 1889 in present-day Ukraine. In 1914, Chernikhov moved to St. Petersburg where he later joined the Architecture faculty of the Imperial Academy of the Arts. Chernikhov became a Stalinist era architect and futurist, publishing several avant-garde books on architectural fantasy that were not well received by the Soviet regime. Due to the strangeness of his work under the regime, few of his designs were ever built, however, Chernikhov’s work is remembered as some of the most inventive of his time.
