“The title is the scientific name for a Lion. As it turned out, I took this picture on a walking safari in the Serengeti. People often think with the significant improvement of DSLR cameras and softwares it is rather easy to get a perfect image. Perhaps people should refer to steady and docile subjects, not to a wild animal on a hunt in the middle of the African bush!

Nothing beat a walking safari. It is the original way and remains the purest form. Away from the comfort of a 4X4 Defender your senses suddenly awaken as the bush becomes more real. Meeting wild animals on their terms as a participant in their world can be far more rewarding than just spectating. Being on foot gets you close and personal with nature. Everything becomes raw. I remember clearly it was early morning and I didn’t get much sleep the night before. We went with two Masai trackers on a walk and were hoping to find the big herd of elephants we saw crossing the night before. As we walked silently in line one behind another, the tracker in front of me brutally stopped and showed me a group of impalas all panic looking in one direction. They were being targeted by a hungry lion. This image is the only frame I managed to capture in a split second of a focused and determined “Panther Leo” in his prime. The effect known as radial blur is perfectly executed and I am very proud of the result.” – Michel Ghatan
