This work was made in the Le Verrier foundry, where two sizes of this sculpture were made, this being the larger.
Born in Pontoise, Bouraine was captured in Germany during the First World War, and interned in Switzerland. In 1922, he exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries, and the following year at the Salon d'Automne. He also made two major commissioned works for the 1937 Paris International exhibition.
