S. & D. Buisson, Leonard-Tsuguharu Foujita, vol. 1, Paris, 2001, pp. 473 & 576, no. 51.07 (illustrated)

Like many of his contemporaries in Paris, Foujita was intrigued by North African experiences, frequently returning to this subject matter in his work. Yet unlike other artists, his depictions were not rooted in fantasy or fiction, but were based upon a direct visual response to what he saw during his travels throughout the region in 1951.

In Le Marché à Ghardaia, a bustling market town is charmingly sketched and captured from a high viewpoint, showing off the Moorish architecture, the fleeting colours of the vendors and the undulating hill town in all its glory.
