Guillaume-François Colson studied and painted in Paris and was a pupil of David. Colson became a very well liked figurative artist and historical painter. He exhibited his first painting, General Bonaparte Entering Alexandria, at the Paris Salon in 1812.

Examples of his work can be seen in the Museums of Rochefort, Dijon and Versailles.
