Alexandre Istrati

(Romanian, 1915-1991)

Alexandre Istrati was a Franco-Romanian abstract expressionist painter. He was born in Dorohoi, Romania in 1915, where he began painting at age nine. He studied at the University of Bucharest, where he became a professor until 1947 when he moved to Paris. Istrati then studied with Andre L’hote at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1953, Istrati won the Prix Kandinsky. He lived with his wife in Paris until his death in 1991.
